Tamariki put tohu on treaty deed

Wednesday 9th November, 2011

A spokesperson for Ngati Whatua ki Orakei says the involvement of a lot of young people helped bring real meaning to the hapu's treaty settlement signing the weekend.

The settlement concludes the Auckland hapu's historic claims.

It will give them shared ownership with other iwi of the region's maunga and some islands, and allows it to buy surplus Crown land including navy properties in Devonport.

Ngarimu Blair says after eight years working on the claim, he was thrilled to see tamariki queuing up to sign the deed.

“You kind of get your head stuck in the books and to see how much the whanau really appreciate and want to be part  of the rising and the history really showed there is a love for our history and elders and really wanting to be part of it,” he says.

Ngarimu Blair says the settlement will part of the heritage of all children in Tamaki Makaurau.
