Monday 7th November, 2011
Ngati Whatua o Orakei is looking forward to put its settlement assets to work for its people.
The hapu signed an $18 million settlement of all its historic claims at Okahu Bay on Saturday.
Chairperson Grant Hawke says they’ve come a long way since his brother Joe Hawke filed the first ever Waitangi Tribunal claim over loss of fisheries, and then occupied Takaparawha-Bastion Point to stop it being turned into housing for the rich by the Muldoon government.
“It’s a big thing to bring about one of the first claims under the Crown and the first land give-back which was Takaparawha and then the wider claims came out of that, because during they were wanting to settle the wider claims and then they gave us WAI 388, this is the one we’ve settled now,” he says.
