Monday 7th November, 2011

The chair of Nga Mana Whenua o Tamaki Makaurau, Paul Majurey, says the landscape of Auckland will change because of the settlements.

On Saturday, the Tamaki collective signed a Record of Agreement of the agreements reached to this point, with the intention of getting a deed of settlement in the first half of next year.

Mr Majurey says in addition to the 15 maunga in the initial framework agreement, Mt Albert, Mt Smart, North Head Historic Reserve and Wiri Historic Reserve will come under joint ownership of the 13 iwi.

There will also be first right to buy surplus Crown land in the region for the next 170 years.

He says each of the 13 iwi will sign a settlement of its specific claims.

“But there is also going to be an important Nga Mana Whenua approach for generations to come in relationship to the co-governance of the tupuna maunga and the management of properties in relation to the right of first refusal regime, so the landscape is going to change very quickly for the generations o come with a real presence for a combined approach by Nga Mana Whenua o Tamaki Makaurau,” Mr Majurey
