National on notice to improve act
Monday, 28th November, 2011
A treaty claim negotiator says the returning National Government needs to do a lot better than it did in its last term if is to meet its deadline for settling historical treaty claims.
Willie Te Aho says deeds have been signed for several settlements he is familiar with in the East Coast and Central North Island, but the enabling legislation has been sitting in a legislative logjam.
He says National has not lived up to expectations
“In terms of treaty settlements, they have had a goal past six years, talking about resolution of historical treaty claims by 2014. There is a logjam of deeds of settlement still waiting to go through Parliament. I think this minister (Chris Finlayson) and this government have failed on delivering on their goals.
Willie Te Aho says it does not matter which party is in power, because the Crown’s treaty machine grinds on regardless.
