The start of hearings on Nga Puhi's historical claims has been delayed for another two months.

The hearing of the last major tribal grouping to go before the Waitangi Tribunal was due to start on late March with evidence on the northern iwi's understanding of the meaning of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the 1835 Declaration of Independence also known as He Whakaputanga.

But at a recent hui for Te Kotahitanga o nga Hapu o Nga Puhi, representatives were told the Waitangi Tribunal would only be able to send half its' members.

One of the spokespeople for Te Kotahitanga, Rudy Taylor says Tribunal's decision to delay the hui wasn't received well.

"The Tribunal is always moving the goalpost."

The hearing was set for March 29, but now the tribunal has declared it will not be ready.

Mr Taylor says Te Kotahitanga were given the option of another hearing in either April or May. "May the 24th will suit us better."

He says it's either a ploy tactic or Nga Puhi needs to wake up. "Has the Crown got enough evidence to show Maori about the Treaty and He Whakaputanga, that Maori never ceded sovereignty?"
