Te Rarawa intials deed for kaitiakitanga

The chair of Te Rarawa says a treaty settlement initialed November 3 provides a way for all far north iwi to have a greater say in the management of conservation land.
Haami Piripi says over the next couple of months the iwi will take the proposed deal out to its marae communities for ratification.
Mr Piripi says as well as giving the iwi a stake in the Aupouri forest, Te Oneroa a Tohe- Ninety Mile Beach and former landcorp farms, it acknowledges the fact a third of its rohe is under the Department of Conservation.
“What this settlement dose is established the efficacy of kaitiakitanga and the role of kaitiaki in and conservation and environmental management throughout Te Hiku o Te Ika,” he says.
At the ceremony at Parliament, Te Aupouri exchanged letters of intent to take the Crown's settlement proposal back to their people.
