Tamariki caputre in welfare agencies
Wednesday 2nd November, 2011
People working under the Jigsaw umbrella to prevent child abuse gather in Wellington today to discuss the state of the sector and the shift to the whanau ora model of service delivery.
Jigsaw chief executive Tau Huirama says the 40-plus agencies involved will be challenged to put children at the heart of their practice.
He says competition for limited funds can affect how children are treated.
“People want the money and they’re inclined to keep the client although there are times when they need to be referred on. I like this model of whanau ora. We really believe in it and want to see it happen for our tamariki. So although we talk about it a lot and our intentions are good, sometimes we forget about our tamariki,” Mr Huirama says.
The Government's Green Paper on vulnerable children will be a major discussion point.
