University entrance to be tougher

Friday 12th August, 2011

Labour's associate education spokesperson says Maori will be badly hurt by changes to university entry rules.

The government wants to make NCEA level 3 the minimum for university entrance after 2015.

Kelvin Davis says it will make it harder for Maori to get in at a time when gaining tertiary qualifications should be encouraged.

“There are dozens of cases of people who haven’t done well at school but have gone on to university and done extremely well. My initial reaction to this was ‘here we go again, it’s going to sit Maori at the bottom of the heap again. We will be shafted off to the unskilled sort of jobs,’” Mr Davis says.

He says last thing the country needs is state resources being used to create elites.
